Nature & Sports Activities in Kona!

Kona plays host to may many events throughout the year including the International Billfish Tournament (every year in August) as well as the IRONMAN™ World Championship (every year in October).

If you are a nature lover, Kona’s calm and clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, diving, and sailing giving you the opportunity to spot dolphins and Hawaiian green sea turtles. One of the coolest and memorable experiences on the island is getting to swim with the Hawaii’s gentle giant, the enchanting manta ray. If getting in the water at night is not ideal, visitors can experience ‘Rays on the Bay’, where you can have a drink at the Sheraton while watching the manta rays through the boat lit, illuminated waters of the bay.

Other significant historic places on the island include Kealakekua Bay, famous for where Captain Cook first set foot on the island in 1778. Head north of Kailua-Kona and find the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park, a 1160-acre park famous for its historic temples, petroglyphs and fishponds.

I hope that gives you some more ideas. Another thing we do is go to the pool at The Kona Reef and talk to the other guests. Many have been coming to Kona for decades, some live there. I always ask “what is their favorite thing to do”.  You get some good ideas and meet some interesting people!

I’d love your feedback after your trip!
